Joyce Digby Nelson Releases New Book That Works Wonders with Words
Wisdom never goes out of style, especially when it’s imparted by someone’s mother. Dog Ear Publishing reviews a new book that features a legacy of words worth preserving from one generation to another.
Olympia Fields, IL, November 14, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Joyce Marie Ward Digby was a one-of-a-kind mother and grandmother: nurturing, strong, witty and faithful. She also had a way with words, sharing idioms and sayings with her children, grandchildren and friends. Her daughter, Joyce Digby Nelson, shares some of these sayings and the meanings behind them in a new collection released by Dog Ear Publishing that celebrates her mother’s wisdom.
“Mama Used to Say ‘Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life’ ” features phrases that relate everything from money and exchanges of favors to spiritual connections and even some that require a PG rating. Joyce Marie’s colorful phrases include such gems as “She looks like death on a soda cracker,” referring to someone who hadn’t been seen in a while and looked disheveled, as if the person had experienced hard times. Someone who needs a push to get a job with a future might hear the phrase “Make sure you get a job and not a jab.”
Joyce Marie was skilled at wordplay, coining some phrases from scripture to prompt critical thinking while designing others to motivate and inspire. Still others, although they have an element of humor, clearly show Joyce was upset about something, such as this phrase that signaled her ire: “Call your maker because you are getting ready to see the undertaker.”
The book is designed to be interactive, with friends or family discussing the phrases and the emotions they bring forth. Above all, the book shows the power of words to negotiate, motivate and elevate. As the author writes, “It has been said that our eyes are windows to our soul, and I believe that our words are also an indication of who and what we are inside.”
Author Joyce Digby Nelson has served others for more than 25 years in health care services and education as a licensed registered occupational therapist and educator. She has a bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy from Loma Linda (Calif.) University, a master’s degree of health science in administration and supervision from the University of Indianapolis and a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from Loyola University in Chicago. She and her husband, Mike, have a daughter, Jocelyn.
