OpHeart and Stratasys 3D Printing Put the Smallest Hearts in the Hands of Surgeons

Engatech and Stratasys team with OpHeart Gala Nov. 30th in Houston to celebrate Charles Fraser M.D.’s work advancing pediatric cardiac care by using 3D printed hearts to plan surgeries.

Houston, TX, November 19, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Stratasys and EngATech will be in Houston in force on Nov. 30th at the OpHeart “Heart-in-Hand” Gala that touts the use of 3D printing in pediatric pre-surgical planning. The event will honor Charles Fraser M.D., the Chief of Congenital Heart Surgery and Cardiac Surgeon In-Charge at Texas Children’s Hospital, for his pioneering work with pre-surgical planning and 3D printed models.

The small 3D printed models of hearts are used by surgeons to visualize and plan the surgery where the team often has an incision area less than the size of a teaspoon. Pre-planning using the 3D printed model of the heart cuts time that the child is in surgery, on heart and lung equipment, under the stress of an operation and improves results and OpHeart advocates making a 3D printed model prior to surgery a standard practice. During the evening, a PolyJet printing machine and 3D printed parts will be demonstrated by Aaron Minard, a Houston representative of the Stratasys 3D printers. Stratasys executives will be there as supporters of OpHeart including Stratasys co-founder Scott Crump. Crump noted wife and co-founder Lisa Crump ran a division of Stratasys 15 years ago that focused on medical 3D printing:

“Lisa launched our surgical planning solution for doctors over a decade ago, so she and I are pleased to see the growing use of 3D printing for this application, especially with infants and children. When surgeons can see and feel prior to surgery what they will encounter, it means the patient spends less time on life-support – less time on the operating table. The result is better patient outcomes and more lives saved.” – Scott Crump – co-founder of Stratasys.
