Superior Grocers Collaborates with Local High School and Mural Artist to Renovate a Community Mural Covered in Graffiti. A $10,000 College Scholarship will be Awarded to Wallis Annenberg High School in Los Angeles for Their Outstanding Community Efforts.
Los Angeles, CA, November 21, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Superior Grocers will be recognizing students from the Wallis Annenberg High School with a $10,000 college scholarship for their outstanding community efforts in revitalizing the graffiti covered mural, “Eat More Fruits and Veggies.”
Located at 7316 Compton Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90001, Superior Grocers created this great mural, originally painted in 2012 to deliver a message of health and wellness to the community. This bright and positive image mural was designed by renowned Los Angeles artist, Andre Miripolsky, and in collaboration with students from Wallis Annenberg High School, the artistic efforts came together.
During the summer of 2015, the mural was severely tagged. The graffiti fully covered the positive and healthy message that was once shared to the community. Understanding the local community, Superior Grocers knew it could not remain in this state and decided to re-invest and re-create the mural with the same team, students from The Wallis Annenberg High School and Andre Miripolsky. The second time around there was one big change. As the team restored the mural, the elements of the tagged wall were incorporated as part of the artwork to represent the local community as a whole.
In recognition for their excellent community work, Superior Foundation, in partnership with Dr. Pepper, will award a $10,000 college scholarship to Wallis Annenberg High School. “We are a strong community supporter of education and the arts. We enjoy collaborating with the youth and expanding their horizons,” said Mimi Song, Chairman & CEO, Superior Grocers. To help recognize this great community effort, 9th District Council member Curren D. Price Jr. will join this recognition event to bring support in educating our youth and encourage community involvement among all youth.
An event to rededicate the “Eat More Fruit and Veggies” mural will take place at the store on Saturday, November 21 at 2:30pm in conjunction with a community Health and Wellness Fair that will take place from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. The address is 7316 Compton Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90001.
Partners from Blue Shield of California, Alta Med Health Services, Presbyterian Hospital, The Consulate of Mexico (Ventanilla de Salud) and Devlyn Eye Vision will be providing free health services and information to customers. Bimbo Bakeries USA is donating healthy snacks for the event.
MetaFour Productions, a non-profit organization in the arts spearheaded by teachers and artists, has been engaged by Superior Grocers to document the mural restoration as well as developing curriculum to engage students from Wallis Annenberg High School in critical thinking about art, street art, and graffiti to address the driving question, “How does art impact a community?”
Co-Founder and CEO of The Accelerated Schools, Johnathan Williams, has been instrumental in ensuring the volunteering and participation of its students. “The Accelerated School’s Wallis Annenberg HS is thrilled to be a creative partner with Superior Grocers and Andre Miripolsky in promoting a healthy lifestyle. We are also glad to beautify our community with this mural project which was made possible by the generosity of Superior Grocers and its Foundation. They are a model citizen that promotes health and wellness in our neighborhood and understands the importance of health awareness in our community.”
