Colorado Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation Selects Denver BrandworksTM for Key Program Expansion

Following successful pilot in the Denver Metro Area, Backpacks & Bleeders initiative set to launch in 10 more cities across the U.S.

Denver, CO, December 07, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Denver Brandworks (DBW) announced today that the Colorado Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF Colorado) has engaged DBW to design and implement a national expansion strategy for one of its most successful community programs to date.

The Backpacks & BleedersTM program, made possible through generous grants by the Bayer corporation, gives hemophiliacs and their families the opportunity to do something that was once unthinkable: climb mountains.

“For hemophiliacs and their families, diagnosis can mean fear and isolation from physical activity in order keep joints healthy,” said Amy Board, executive director of NHF Colorado. “This traditionally meant they had few, if any, options for doing things we often take for granted, like simply walking a trail or hiking a mountain. Our Backpacks & Bleeders program is changing that, by enabling individuals and their entire families to experience new outdoor adventures together in a safe way.”

Based on 2013 estimates, there are nearly 20,000 people diagnosed with hemophilia living in the United States. For hemophiliacs, just one joint bleed can be debilitating, due the body’s inability to create blood clots. Because of this, hemophiliacs often avoid outdoor activities such as hiking and climbing, where minor abrasions and joint stress are common.

The Backpacks & Bleeders program gives participants and their families a way to experience the outdoors at little to no-cost, and do it in a controlled way that is specifically tailored to their unique needs.

Hikes and other outdoor events are organized by a volunteer team of experts, including licensed emergency medical professionals, who are specifically trained in the care of hemophilia. The team prepares program participants and accompanies them during the activity, acting as guides while also ensuring any medical issues can be dealt with immediately.

The program was created and piloted by NHF Colorado starting in 2013 and has grown quickly, with more than 100 community members now regularly participating in the program.

Encouraged by the success in the Denver Metro Area, Bayer has asked NHF Colorado to steward expansion of the program nationally. NHF Colorado engaged DBW to provide strategic marketing counsel and implementation services for the effort.

“We’re excited and honored to be helping NHF Colorado expand a program that is helping so many people in such a fundamental way,” said Courtney Mathis, partner and head of the non-profit practice at DBW. “This program has been making an incredible difference in the lives of Coloradans, and we’re honored to help recreate that success in cities across the country.”
