Event Synopsis:
On October 5, 2015, the United States and 11 other countries announced the completion of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). The 12 countries (Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the United States and Vietnam) account for 40% of the global economy and over 800 million consumers. The TPP seeks to lower tariffs and non-tariff barriers, strengthen intellectual property protections, establish enforceable standards for labor and environmental protections, and establish an investor-state dispute settlement mechanism.
Essentially, the TPP is an expansion of the Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership Agreement (TPSEP or P4) signed in 2006 between Brunei, Chile, Singapore, and New Zealand.
