ERG Purchases Green Power to Meet 100 Percent of Its Corporate-Wide Electricity Use

U.S. EPA Recognizes ERG for Leading Green Power Purchase

Lexington, MA, December 21, 2007 --(PR.com)-- ERG, a leading environmental consulting firm, continues its long-standing commitment to environmental sustainability by purchasing green power to meet 100 percent of its corporate-wide electricity use. ERG announced today a new two-year purchase of more than 1.5 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) annually of renewable energy certificates (RECs), which matches the annual purchased electricity consumption at its 13 offices nationwide. The RECs are being purchased from 3Degrees, a renewable energy supplier that sources its products from a mix of new renewable resources, such as wind, biomass, geothermal, and solar sources.

With its most recent green power purchase, ERG renews its leading position in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Green Power Partnership. In 2003, ERG became one of the first consulting firms to join the EPA Green Power Partnership. Since that time, ERG has increased its green power purchase by more than 300 percent. ERG is also a member of EPA’s Green Power Leadership Club and 100 Percent Purchasers List.

"This purchase is a very tangible way for ERG to demonstrate to our employees, our customers, and our communities that we support the development of clean, renewable energy resources and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions," said ERG's President, David Meyers.

EPA estimates that ERG’s green power purchase of more than 1.5 million kWh is equivalent to avoiding the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of nearly 200 passenger cars each year, or is the equivalent amount of electricity needed to power nearly 100 average American households annually (based on national average utility subregion emissions rates).

“Green power” is defined as electricity that is generated from environmentally preferable renewable resources, such as solar, wind, geothermal, biogas, biomass, and low-impact hydro. These resources generate electricity with zero human-caused carbon dioxide emissions, and they offer a superior environmental profile to conventional power generation. In addition, buying green power helps support the development of new renewable energy capacity nationwide.

ERG’s green power commitment is one of several initiatives championed under its corporate Environmental Management System (EMS). Under the EMS, ERG is also providing incentives for employee use of public transportation, instituting a yearlong challenge to see which office can achieve the highest reduction in paper consumption, and encouraging, supporting, and tracking employee purchases of green power at home. In addition, ERG’s Arlington, Virginia office recently relocated to a LEED-certified building.
