LexisNexis’ Title "Indian Counter-Terrorism Law," Authored by Dr. Shruti Bedi, Released by Justice AK Sikri

Gurgaon, India, January 15, 2016 --(PR.com)-- LexisNexis Title ‘Indian Counter-Terrorism Law’ authored by Dr. Shruti Bedi, Senior Assistant Professor, University Institute of Legal Studies, Panjab University, was released by Hon’ble MrJustice AK Sikri, Judge, Supreme Court of India, at the Chandigarh Judicial Academy on January 10, 2016, in the presence of Hon’ble Mr. Justice HS Bedi, Former Judge, Supreme Court of India; Hon’ble Mr. Justice Mahesh Grover, Judge, Punjab and Haryana High Court; Hon’ble Mr. Justice SS Sodhi, Former Chief Justice, Allahabad High Court; Prof. Arun Kumar Grover, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University; and Mr. RS Cheema, Senior Advocate.

Indian Counter-Terrorism Law briefly describes preventive detention laws in existence in British India and post-independence and then categorically appraises the provisions of the two anti-terror laws of the past and the current laws on the subject along with a brief account of the legislative anomalies and the strengths of these statutes. The book is a reference resource for LLB and LLM students and scholars of counter-terrorism laws and strategies and can also be a useful resource for academicians, judges, lawyers, police officers, legislators and members of special bodies involved in tackling this menace.

Justice HS Bedi welcomed the members of legal fraternity and mentioned about Justice SS Sodhi who had dealt with cases of terrorism as a judge. He also gave instances on how the state has dealt with terrorism in the past and the role of the judiciary in dealing with it.

On the book Justice AK Sikri said, “The beauty of the book is the discussion of counter-terrorism laws in India in the context of fine and delicate balance that needs to be maintained in ensuring Human Rights. Unlike most books on terrorism, this book specifically explores the principal anti-terror statutes in India enacted by the Parliament to legally prevent and punish the terrorists.” About Dr. Shruti Bedi, the author of the books, he mentioned, “I commend the tireless efforts of the author for taking the initiative in bringing out the book.”

During the book launch event, Dr. Shruti Bedi said, “An anti-terror law needs to be more than a penal statute. These extraordinary laws have been justified as crucial correctives that work towards ultimate protection of the liberty of an individual. It becomes even more imperative to uphold the rule of law and the hard-earned rights of humanity.”

Justice Mahesh Grover described the ideology of a terrorist and how one man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter. He added, “Even the death penalty was no deterrent for a person (terrorist), who was willing to blow himself up for the cause that he believes in.” Prof. Arun Kumar Grover, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, said, “The subject is of much relevance in today’s scenario.” Mr. RS Cheema, Senior Advocate, talked about the lacunae in the current anti-terror laws and the need for a comprehensive research in this area.

Nirupam Srivastava, Director, Head Strategy and M&A, India South Asia at LexisNexis, said “Indian Counter-Terrorism Law contains the complete interpretation of the provisions of the Indian counter-terrorism legislation. It provides an elaborate and exhaustive judicial interpretation of the cases under Indian statutes and proves to be a comprehensive resource on the progress of the counter-terror regime in India from the British era to date.”
