Local Seniors Graduate from Unique Police Academy at Atlantic Shores Retirement Community

Virginia Beach, VA, January 23, 2016 --(PR.com)-- Sixteen seniors age 55+ from Atlantic Shores Retirement Community and around the city of Virginia Beach proudly graduated from the Virginia Beach Police Department’s Senior Citizens' Police Academy on November 20, 2015.

This special eight-week course, held at Atlantic Shores Retirement Community, was designed to give participants a better understanding of the procedures, guidelines, responsibilities, demands, personnel, equipment, policies and laws that guide the police department's decisions, with topics ranging from forensics, K-9 and Mounted Patrol units, to special operations, narcotics, and senior safety.

The series also included an overview of the TRIAD/Salt program, designed to reduce the victimization of seniors in the local community. Certain classes featured special live presentations or field trips, so students could more fully experience elements of select programs -- including a visit to the city jail.

Participating students had a wide range of different backgrounds, careers and interests, but a common desire to be engaged in their community, and curiosity about their local police force.

Upon graduation, students received a certificate of completion, the ability to sign up for a Ride-A-Long with a VBPD Patrol officer, and the opportunity to become volunteer participants for various city programs.
