British Civil War Course About to Start at NSC

Oswestry, United Kingdom, January 28, 2016 --(PR.com)-- A new part-time leisure course is about to start at North Shropshire College’s (NSC) Oswestry Campus. The ‘Exploring the British Civil Wars , 1642 to 1660’ course will lift the lid on what life was like during those turbulent times, the course will be taught by Dr. Jonathan Worton. The course focuses on the Civil War in Oswestry, Shropshire and the Welsh Marches; Oswestry was an important Royalist stronghold for part of the war before being ransacked by Parliamentarian forces.

The course lasts for five weeks and will cover a wide range of areas including; social, religious, political and military topics. These topics are considered within the wider context of mid-seventeenth century British society and national affairs.

Dr. Worton commented on his upcoming course, saying, "I am fascinated by many aspects of British history, but find the seventeenth-century Civil Wars especially absorbing. By presenting this new course for NSC I hope to engage students with this significant period of our past, and also to share current historical thinking about the conflict and society at that time. Shropshire and the surrounding region were particularly involved in the 'Great' Civil War of 1642 to 1646, so this course should be thought-provoking to those with an interest in local as well as national history. Oswestry itself became an important stronghold at that time, so it is appropriate that the course will be held at the College's campus there."

Dr. Worton is a Shropshire-based military and local historian. In gaining his PhD he researched in detail military and social aspects of the English Civil Wars in the borderlands of Wales. He is currently an independent researcher, speaker, writer and educator on historical subjects. Dr Worton has had several articles published, and his first book, To Settle the Crown: Waging Civil War in Shropshire, 1642-1648, will be published in March this year.

The new course starts on the 23rd February and lasts for 5 weeks. To reserve a place please go to www.nsc.ac.uk or call NSC reception on 01691 688000.
