During Blizzard 2016, Chicagoans Slept Out for Homeless, Raised $18,000

Board members of a social services organization slept outdoors in Chicago to raise awareness and funds to help homeless.

Chicago, IL, January 30, 2016 --(PR.com)-- As a major blizzard hit the East Coast, the Board Members of the 530 Fullerton Foundation slept on the streets of Chicago last weekend to raise awareness around the issues facing the 140,000 people who are homeless in Chicago. The Sleep Out also functioned as a fundraiser for the Foundation. The Foundation was able to raise over $18,000 to support its programs: it provides over 10,000 hot meals annually, provides foot and basic health screenings, operates a clothes closet and toiletries program, and provides free haircuts.

“By actually living on the street from sunset to sunrise, our Board experienced first-hand the difficulties facing many of our guests,” said JD Miller, President of the Foundation’s Board of Directors. “Finding a safe place to sleep, securing nourishing food to eat, having enough protection to stay warm in the snow – all are small challenges that add up to big problems when you are living on the street.”

The group live-tweeted their event using the hashtag #530Sleeps – where videos, photos, and thoughts were posted through the night. Financial support to the group can also be provided at http://www.crowdrise.com/homelessnessSleepout
