Islands Society Recognizes Sea Islands Historian as a “Local Female Leader”

Suzannah Smith Miles becomes the first woman from the Sea Islands to be selected for the nonprofit’s female leadership recognition program.

Hilton Head, SC, February 07, 2016 --(PR.com)-- Today, the Islands Society announced that it has selected Suzannah Smith Miles as its “Local Female Leader” for December 2015. Miles received the award for her efforts to preserve the unique history of the sea islands off the coast of South Carolina.

“Miles’s contribution to the preservation of the history and culture of the Sea Islands is a gift to all those who inhabit the islands,” says James Carroll, Community Engagement Manager for the Sea Islands Society. “Miles is seen as the leading expert on the history of Lowcountry. She encourages women and young girls to find their niche and pursue their passions, which makes her a great role model for women and young girls,” adds Carroll.

Her work also includes the preservation of cultures of populations that have inhabited the Sea Islands throughout history. “Populations of marginalized people such as the Sewee People and the Geechee-Gullah have played and continue to play a vital role here in the Sea Islands,” says Carroll. “Her role in the preservation of cultures is something to be admired, as well as her dedication to the conservation of the ecosystems of the Sea islands.”

About the Local Female Leaders Program

Through the Local Female Leaders Program, the Islands Society recognizes females from around the world who are thought leaders in their local communities. Under the program, the Islands Society selects a local female leader from a different island community each month. That local female leader is then provided the opportunity to share her insights on how the health and well-being of girls and women can be improved in her own community based on her own life experiences.
