Highlights for Children has donated 36,331 magazines valued at $181,292 through their #Giving Tuesday project. These magazines will benefit Kids Need to Read’s literacy projects for children, including READ Together and The Page Coach.

Mesa, AZ, February 22, 2016 --(PR.com)-- Highlights for Children has donated 36,331 Highlights magazines valued at $181,292 to Kids Need to Read. The contribution was the result of Highlights for Children’s #Giving Tuesday project. The donated magazines will be used in ongoing Kids Need to Read projects, including The Page Coach and READ Together.

READ Together partners with poorly funded schools located in low socioeconomic areas to encourage adult caregivers to read every day with their children. The program utilizes a wealth of leveled books, educational resources, reading buddies, tips for caregivers on the go, and inspiration, all designed to increase at-home reading activities on a daily basis. Through a consistent, effective approach, young students will develop vital reading skills that will serve them throughout their educational years and beyond.

Kids Need to Read's newest project, The Page Coach, is a mobile conveyor of literary treasure to children living in low socioeconomic neighborhoods in the Mesa/Phoenix metropolitan area and beyond. The Page Coach will help to neutralize the regressive effects caused during the summer break by hosting a variety of reading events at Boys and Girls Clubs, transitional homes, recreation centers, libraries, schools, and special events.

Highlights for Children is not only a staple in the world of children’s literacy, but a staple of growing up. During childhood, everyone has encountered and enjoyed an issue of one of their magazines. Whether it’s their popular Highlights, or their High Five magazine for emerging readers, everyone has enjoyed this terrific literary resource. Currently they have four major publications. In addition to Highlights and High Five, they offer High Five Bilingüe for emerging readers who are learning either English or Spanish, as well as Hello!, a magazine for babies that has colorful pictures, age appropriate stories, and fun activities that parents can enjoy with their child. Highlights for Children does so much for the community and we are excited to be able to provide Highlights to children in need through our literacy programs.

“We are deeply thankful to Highlights for Children and their staff who put together the #GivingTuesday campaign, as well as everyone who supported the magazine-raiser on behalf of Kids Need to Read,” said Executive Director Denise Gary. “The magazines are a high quality literacy resource for children and exceedingly valuable to our organization’s programs. Thank you all for this wonderful treasure!”
