Hear people speak a foreign language can strike a child as odd. Teaching our children to appreciate all that we can learn from other cultures at an early age is not only a great learning tool but also a great way to integrate them into a society that represents all backgrounds and nationalities. A good example of this is how, in the United States, we use words that actually come from other languages. The word ballet is derived from French origin or pasta, from our friends in Italy.
To help incorporate diversity into your child’s life, there’s a vast array of ways to do this. Parents can use books, video games or toys to introduce different cultures. A good idea is to use books that highlight diversities or characters with diverse backgrounds. There is a lot of preparation before, during and after that goes into teaching different nationalities with children, so be proactive in your approach. Since some of your neighbors and friends have different accents or skin colors, it’s best to approach this concept right away and openly so that they understand and are embrace these differences.
At Apple Montessori Schools, each preschool, kindergarten and elementary classroom focuses on one country and studies its rich culture. The students explore different traditions, the way they dress and even food that they eat. Their discoveries culminate in an International Day celebration with our families, featuring songs and dances performed by our students and traditional foods from our vast heritages.
“We’re proud to share an internationally-rich learning environment with children from all different cultures,” said Joanne Mooney, President of Apple Montessori Schools. “International Day is a great opportunity for children to discover the wonders of our diverse differences as well as our many unifying similarities.”
