Vinyl Bonds: Ceresana Analyzes the World Market for Adhesives
Where once massive rivets and screws were needed, a couple of droplets of adhesives are often enough today.
Konstanz, Germany, February 27, 2016 --(PR.com)-- "Adhesives are an evenly, calculable and durable bond for different materials," says Oliver Kutsch, CEO of the market research institute Ceresana. "Every year more than 13 million tonnes of adhesives are consumed worldwide." The demand will rise, with no end in sight. According to the latest study from Ceresana, adhesives revenues will rise by 3.1% per year until 2022. The Asia-Pacific region is accounting for more than a third of global demand.
Vinyl is Number One
Vinyl products accounted for more than 4 million tonnes of sales in 2014 and were therefore the most important types of adhesives, followed at a great distance by acrylic, polyurethane, elastomeric, epoxy and other types of adhesives. Vinyl adhesives include products based on polyvinyl acetate (PVAC) in particular. Polyvinyl acetate is processed into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) which in turn is used as adhesive for porous material. Vinyl adhesives are used for paper, packaging and wood products in particular. Regional differences can be considerable. In Western Europe, Paper and Packaging is the largest application area. As the sales will stagnate on a high level over the next eight years, the expectations for adhesives are tempered as well. In many emerging and developing countries, the strong construction industry will contribute to growth.
Adhesives are Used Most in Construction
Adhesives for wall and floor coverings, paneling and panels, thermal insulation, maintenance and building refurbishment: almost 30% of the overall worldwide adhesives demand was generated by the construction industry in 2014, which was thus the most important sales market. Ceresana's study analyzes the use of adhesives in the following segments: Paper and Packaging, Wood Processing, Transportation, Shoes and Leather, Consumer Goods as well as other applications.
Environmentally Friendly Bonds are in Demand
In 2014, about 49% of globally consumed adhesives were waterborne. The remaining share was accounted for by hot melts, reactive adhesives, solvent-based adhesives, and other technologies. Waterborne adhesives are mainly used for packaging and construction applications, for example PSA labels and stickers as well as for installing carpets and insulations. Manufacturers are still investing a considerable amount of time and money in research and development in order to replace solvent-based adhesives by safe and environmentally friendly solvent-free dispersion adhesives. Dispersion adhesives are mainly used for porous materials, which absorb the water of the fluid adhesive layer. For example PVAC, acrylics, elastomers and polyurethane (PUR) count among them.
The Study in Brief
Chapter 1 provides a description and analysis of the global market for adhesives, including forecasts up to 2022. The development of revenues, demand volumes and production is analyzed for each region.
Chapter 2 offers a detailed analysis of 17 countries: overall demand, export, import and revenues of adhesives. In addition, these countries are also analyzed in terms of application area and adhesives technology. Market data on demand and production volume of each country is regarded for each type of adhesive.
Chapter 3 gives a detailed report on regional markets for adhesives: data and influencing factors on the use in Paper and Packaging, Construction, Wood Processing, Transportation, Shoes and Leather, Consumer Goods, and other application areas.
Chapter 4 describes the demand for adhesives and its production volume for each of the following products: vinyls, acrylics, polyurethane (PUR), elastomers, epoxy, and other adhesives.
In Chapter 5, the different technologies are described: waterborne adhesives, hot melts, solvent-based adhesives, reactive adhesives, and other technologies.
Chapter 6 offers a useful directory of producers covering the most important producers, clearly arranged according to contact details, revenues, profit, product range, production sites, profile summary, and specific information on adhesives. In-depth profiles of 113 manufacturers are given, including 3M Company, Bolton Adhesives, Compagnie de Saint-Gobain S.A., DIC Corporation, Etex Group N.V., H.B. Fuller, Henkel AG & Co. KGaA, Illinois Tool Works Inc. (ITW), Sika AG, and The Dow Chemical Company.
