The Untold Stories of Mixed Race Children

Chicago, IL, January 01, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Myrtice Edwards explores the experiences of multiracial and multiethnic children in her new book Dirty Sally. This Christian based children’s book seeks to raise awareness within the bi-racial community. Allegorical tales detail the unspoken realities facing multiracial children, and encourage young readers on how they might make better choices by referring to biblical scripture as a teaching tool.

Through a series of stories Edwards creates a framework for children to consider the experiences of racially mixed children in America. In each instance Edwards lends insight to the reader by exposing untold stories of name calling, confusion, feelings of self-loathing, and ultimately of acceptance and recognition of the beauty which lies in a unique heritage. At the end of each story Edwards provides a series of questions and suggested Bible verses, guiding the reader on path towards strength, love, and faith through the eternal example of God’s word.

Dirty Sally unfolds the misconceptions surrounding racial identity. When society socializes children into selecting one racial identity and not both, we risk empowering one and devaluing the other. Edwards creates possibility for acceptance and understanding by developing a thoughtful dialogue framed, not only by her creative story telling, but also by a desire to initiate a conversation to take place long after reading Dirty Sally.

Teaching children to embrace their heritage, and empowering parents with a vocabulary to discuss the difficult topic of growing up as a racially mixed child is more than the pleasure of reading a book; it is a catalyst to change. The term “Dirty Sally” has a long heritage in American history, first used as an old slavery term to identify the descendant of Sally Hemmings and the late President Thomas Jefferson. Myrtice Edwards takes the first step in addressing a cruel facet of American culture. Dirty Sally is a must read not only for inter-racial families, but for all parents hoping to instill in their children a sense of understanding and compassion.
