Nationwide Lamp Recycling Company Now Recycles Auto Air Bags (SRS Devices) with Zero Landfill Waste

Lighting Resources, nationwide recycler of fluorescent bulbs since 1989, has added auto air bags and seatbelt pre-tensioners to the list of items it processes. The company's process recovers scrap metal, plastic, and scrap nylon while safely managing detonation and disposal of charge units in compliance with state and federal regulations.

Johnson City, TN, March 12, 2016 --(PR.com)-- With the addition of a facility in Johnson City, Tennessee, in 2015 and hiring of recycling industry veteran Steve Barnett, Lighting Resources now offers full recycling services for automotive airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners. These items, also known as supplemental restraint devices (SRS), are in addition to the lamps, batteries, ballasts, electronic waste and other materials its nationwide facilities recycle. Auto SRS devices are processed at the company's state-permitted facility in Johnson City, which also processes electronic waste recycling and data destruction shredding.

While the first commercial airbag designs were introduced in passenger vehicles in the 1970s, the equipment became mandatory on all cars and light trucks sold in the United States on September 1, 1998, with the implementation of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991. Air bags are now standard equipment in tens of millions of vehicles. As vehicles go out of commission, airbags, which contain recyclable components as well as explosive charge units, should be properly disposed of for both safety and regulatory reasons. Car dealers, auto repair shops, auto recyclers, salvage yards and others working with decommissioned vehicles are required to know and follow state regulations regarding the proper handling and disposal of SRS devices.

Lighting Resources' recycling process disassembles both seat belt pre-tensioners and air bags from steering wheel, glove box, side curtain, and other locations. The charge units are recovered along with the nylon bag or seatbelt strapping, metal, and plastic components. Lighting Resources' one-hundred percent recovery and reclamation of airbag components ensures there is zero landfill waste of a recycled airbag module.

The company's Johnson City, Tennessee facility also provides complete security, including secured fenced storage, 24-hour video surveillance, and barcode tracking of all recycled SRS devices. The Johnson City facility and its airbag recycling operations are managed by Steve Barnett, founder of Southeast Recycling who joined Lighting Resources in late 2015. Mr. Barnett's extensive knowledge of rules and regulations for properly handling recyclable materials continues to serve recycling customers well through his new role with Lighting Resources. Contact Mr. Barnett at (423) 328-7012 for more information on auto airbag disposal and recycling.
