Islands Society Selects Inaugural Lowcountry Emerging Leader
The Islands Society has selected its inaugural Lowcountry Emerging Leader because of her focus on empowering local communities in the Lowcountry through collaborations with human services and other organizations.
Charleston, SC, March 12, 2016 --(PR.com)-- The Islands Society is pleased to announce that Danielle Breidung has been selected as the inaugural “Lowcountry Emerging Leader” by its constituent society for the Lowcountry - the Sea Islands Society.
Although her career initially involved expanding economic opportunities available to small agricultural cooperatives in the Brazilian Amazon, she was given the award because of her focus on empowering local communities in the Lowcountry through collaborations with human services and other organizations.
Asked about her career in public service, Breidung explained, “Rather than thinking of my professional endeavors in the context of public service, I see my career path as being uniquely my own with a focus on positively contributing to the greater good.”
About Danielle Breidung
Breidung is a program coordinator for the Lowcountry Area Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Coalition and a Civic Engagement Coordinator on the University of South Carolina Beaufort campus. Originally from Waunakee, Wisconsin, she discovered her passion for service by participating in 4-H for ten years.
Breidung holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Anthropology with minors in Environmental Studies and Poverty and Human Capability Studies from Washington and Lee University. In August 2015, she was granted a Master of Education degree in international higher education from Loyola University Chicago.
After working in the Brazilian Amazon for two years as a liaison between agricultural cooperatives and nutraceutical companies in the United States, Breidung returned to the United States in July 2014. Shortly thereafter, she began working at the University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB).
As the Civic Engagement Coordinator, Danielle has the opportunity to collaborate with the Rotaract Club, Entrepreneurship Team, and Sand Shark Veterans. Additionally, she participates in a wide variety of coalitions, meetings, and events in order to strengthen USCB's relationships with community partners.

The Islands Society believes that emerging leaders in these South Carolina counties should be given a global platform to share their insights on how we can improve the health and well-being of island communities around the world.
Through the Lowcountry Emerging Leaders Program, the Islands Society recognizes a young professional from a different Lowcountry island community each month. That individual is given the opportunity to share their insights on how the health and well-being of other island communities can be improved based on their own life experiences.
The Lowcountry Emerging Leaders Program provides young leaders a platform to share their insights on how we can improve the health and well-being of local island communities in Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton, Jasper, Berkeley, and Charleston Counties, South Carolina.
