5,000 Hours of Service in Four Days - Shorecrest Prep High School Students Spend Entire Week in Service
St. Petersburg, FL, March 16, 2016 --(PR.com)-- For the seventh consecutive year, Shorecrest Preparatory School in Saint Petersburg, Florida, will send more than 300 high school students and 40 faculty members across Tampa Bay, the country and the world to perform Service Learning projects as a part of the school’s annual Service Week. Service Week 2016 is Monday, March 14 through Thursday, March 17.
Service Week is a 4-day learning experience in which students immerse themselves in service projects with non-profits and educational institutions. The entire 9th-12th grade Shorecrest Upper School student body participates in Service Week.
Students have the opportunity to lead and organize Service Projects on their own, with guidance from faculty and administration. This year, senior Brian Sotolongo is leading a project with the Veterans Administration. Jacob Nelson, also Class of 2016, is working with St. Pete’s Free Clinic Food Bank on a class called Cook and Serve, where students learn basic cooking techniques and then apply those skills in service to others.
Other local projects include work with Southeastern Guide Dogs, The Kind Mouse Food Pantry, Habitat for Humanity Pinellas County, Melrose Elementary School and Westminster Palms retirement community, where students will help to build affordable homes, beautify local schools and teach older residents how to use technology to stay involved and connected.
Other Shorecrest students will take trips across the U.S. including a trip to National Forests in Tennessee and North Carolina, and another to Charleston, South Carolina where they will help clean up and restore historically significant sections of the city.
Internationally, students will make history with a group visit to Cuba where they will explore environmental conservation on reefs. Other groups will help local communities in the Peruvian mountains or distribute shoes gathered from a school-wide shoe drive to children in Costa Rica.
According to Shorecrest Director of Service Learning Diego Duran-Medina, “One of the things that drew me to lead the Service Learning Program at Shorecrest is the school’s whole-hearted commitment to character education and civic engagement. Service Week is a compelling demonstration of that. For four full days, students are given the opportunity to devote themselves entirely to service - there are no classes, no tests - but deep, connected learning is happening, using our world as a working, living lab while responding to the call to serve others within our local, national and global communities.”
