Mozart Makes This Band More Than a Band
Music students at the Crane School of Music apply their Classical music studies to a unique setting: a Ska-Punk band.
Syracuse, NY, January 05, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Students of the Crane School of Music take their Classical Training to a unique setting: the Ska-Punk band Behind Bad Luck!
What if you went to a rock show and on stage you saw the 18th century J.S. Bach, strumming upstrokes on an electric guitar, or perhaps the infamous Beethoven flailing through boisterous fills on the drum set? What would be your reaction if you witnessed Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart belting out punk rock vocals into a microphone? Finally, imagine if they had all collaborated on a composition, to be performed by this unique setting, in the style of classical music.
This kind of surreal music conglomeration will come to life at Mezzanotte Lounge (658 N Salina St, Syracuse), Thursday, January 10th, when Ska-Punk band Behind Bad Luck! (joined by the esteemed Ska band The Action!) takes the stage to perform their songs. Because each member of Behind Bad Luck! is a music student studying at SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music, the group cannot deny the great influence of their undergraduate studies. Behind Bad Luck!’s lead guitarist, John Pizzirusso explains: “Studying [Classical] music theory changes our writing style in that, it brings a different element that you wouldn’t typically hear in a Pop Rock band.” That element is the focused compositional techniques of classical composers from centuries past.
In a four semester sequence, students at the Crane School must analyze works written by composers from before the birth of Christ to those currently writing today. In doing this, the students gain an understanding of the development of music composition, and techniques that can transform melodies into full orchestral masterworks. Professors at the Crane School of Music teach their students to employ the skills they hone in the theory classroom, into all of their music endeavors.
For the eight performers of Behind Bad Luck!, the long heritage of music is an integral part of their experience. This can be found in the Ska-Punk chorales that introduce their original “Soviet Russia”, or finish out “Conflict of Interest, Mr. Vice President”; both of which pay dues to the heralded religious chorales of J.S. Bach. Other manifestations of Crane studies in their music are found in the band’s careful attention to song form, and within that attention, the practice of classical harmonic theory. In Behind Bad Luck!’s music, underlying the punk vocals, youthful energy, and artistic expression, is a long practiced craft – a characteristic the band shares with few contemporaries in the current rock band environment.
