LaGuardia Plaza Hotel Joins NYC Carbon Challenge in Fight Against Climate Change
LPH is the First Queens-Based Hotel to Join the Challenge as Initiated by the de Blasio Administration.
Queens, NY, April 09, 2016 --(PR.com)-- LaGuardia Plaza Hotel (LPH), the premier independent hotel located in the New York City (NYC) borough of Queens, announced participation in the NYC Carbon Challenge for Hotels, a partnership between the City and private and institutional sector leaders who have committed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from their buildings by 30 percent or more in ten years. The program’s expansion to hotels is a key initiative in Mayor Bill de Blasio’s One City: Built to Last, New York City’s ten-year plan to improve the energy efficiency of its buildings and put the City on the pathway to achieving its goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050.
The first hotel in Queens to participate in the program, LPH joins 18 of New York City’s leading hotels in an effort to make energy efficiency investments in their buildings over the next ten years. The participating hotels, multifamily buildings, universities, hospitals and commercial offices will implement a diverse range of strategies to achieve the 30 percent greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal.
“LaGuardia Plaza Hotel has always prioritized a positive experience for both our guests and surrounding communities, and the NYC Carbon Challenge is our latest initiative in honoring that principle,” said Stephen Field, Ownership representative of LaGuardia Plaza Hotel and CEO of Synergy Hospitality. “We’re proud to be joining forces with City government to combat climate change by reducing the carbon footprint at LaGuardia Plaza Hotel.”
The improvements made by the participating hotels are projected to reduce citywide GHG emissions by an additional 35,000 metric tons and result in an estimated $25 million in energy cost savings.
In order to meet the Carbon Challenge, Synergy’s energy consultant Evolution Energy Partners, developed a comprehensive energy efficiency project that will be cash-flow positive from day one. Evolution Energy Partners and Synergy selected OpTerra Energy Services to design and install the project, which will include HVAC upgrades, LED lighting with intelligent controls, and a number of other cost-saving improvements. The project cost will be embedded in the hotel's power bills through a four-year supply agreement with Constellation's Efficiency Made Easy program, requiring zero capital outlay from the hotel.
LaGuardia Plaza Hotel features nearly 9,000 square feet of newly renovated meeting space and 358 guest rooms. Awarded the “Best of the Boro” by readers of The Queens Courier in 2014, the hotel is centrally located to provide travelers with convenient access to-and-from LaGuardia Airport and local destinations.
