Kris Zapata and Colleen Roach, two former employees, acquired Ruth Meric Catering for an undisclosed amount upon founder Ruthee Meric's decision to retire from the high-stress catering industry.
New owner Zapata, a chef and former employee at Tony's at Home catering company, says there will be no layoffs as a result of the acquisition, which included catering vans, kitchen equipment and the building and property at 3030 Audley in River Oaks.
In addition to offering gourmet take-out prepared meals, Zapata also plans to increase the number of weddings while maintaining and expanding the strong roster of corporate clients served in the past.
Zapata says the company will continue to operate under the Ruth Meric Catering name. "It's how people know of us, so we're just going to stick with what's been working," she says.
Meric began her culinary career in her hometown of New Orleans at the Royal Sonesta Hotel and later worked for the Brennan family in New Orleans and Houston before co-founding Charley T's restaurant. She founded the catering company in 1988 and has orchestrated events such as the opening of the
Children's Museum, Child Advocates Galas and dinners for former First Lady Barbara Bush, Martina Navratilova and Boutros Boutros Gali.
