Transgender, Mormon Male Joins All-Inclusive Fraternity Sigma Phi Beta at ASU
Augustus Crosby, a current sophomore, Chemical Engineering student, and transgender man at Arizona State University was inducted last Saturday into Sigma Phi Beta’s brotherhood.
Tempe, AZ, April 13, 2016 --(PR.com)-- Augustus Crosby, who transferred from BYU-Provo this semester to ASU, started his transition last November with a coming out video which can be found on his Facebook1 and YouTube2 pages, which combined have gathered over 21K views. He started his medical transition in December with the male hormone testosterone, and is saving up for top surgery to remove breast tissue3. He was inducted Saturday into Sigma Phi Beta at ASU.
When asked why Crosby first rushed Sigma Phi Beta4 he replied that he “felt that maybe it could be the thing I was looking for, a combination of friendship, service and leadership opportunities, and a tie to the LGBT community.”
“After the first rush event, I knew I had found the place I wanted to be.” He had previously volunteered his time with the BYU program, BYU Tutoring, as Marketing Chair and was looking to fill that void. “Out of all the things I left at BYU – friends, USGA5 (BYU’s unofficial LGBT Club), research, the Foreign Language Student Residence, and school itself, the hardest thing to leave was BYU Tutoring, because I had put so much time and effort into building, organizing, and marketing for it. But I know that I can do all those things and more with Sigma Phi Beta, and I definitely plan to.”
Crosby’s pledge class philanthropy raised just under $500 for the National Center of Transgender Equality. “The idea was that because it was the Transgender Day of Visibility on the 31st of March and the new anti-trans law in North Carolina had been all over the news, it would make sense to raise money for the advocacy of transgender rights by donating to NCTE. The campaign goes until the end of the ASU semester, around the beginning of May.6”
In response to how he feels about his Mormon background, he says, “I embrace it. It has made me who I am today. I am actually in fact still LDS, and I try to be there for those who are LGBT and Mormon. I also volunteer with a LGBT Mormon group called ALL Arizona7 that’s having a conference on the 23rd of April.”
