Political Commentator Cokie Roberts to Speak at Library Foundation Fundraiser
Fort Lauderdale, FL, April 14, 2016 --(PR.com)-- Emmy Award-winning television host and NPR political commentator Cokie Roberts will bring her knowledge and perspective of Washington D.C. power dynamics - both present and past - to Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday, May 18 at a fundraising event for the Broward Public Library Foundation. The evening event, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., includes a cocktail reception, book sales and signings and a talk by Roberts at the NSU Art Museum (One East Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale).
In her latest book, "Capital Dames: The Civil War and the Women of Washington, 1848-1868," Roberts continues to document the role women have played in American history. "Capital Dames" does not shy away from the campaigns, controversies, and scandals churning in the streets of the nation’s capital. At the same time, Roberts honors the scores of ordinary Washington women who worked in munitions factories, sewed gunpowder bags for the Navy Yard, or cut out paper money at the Treasury.
The New York Times Book Review said about the author: “Cokie Roberts regularly dissects the power dynamics of modern-day Washington. As an author, though, she’s demonstrated a special regard for the farther reaches of American history and its behind-the-scenes players.”
With a lifetime of experience in the thick of Washington politics and a deep and abiding interest in the role women have played in American history, Roberts has a singular perspective and is perfectly placed to reassess the importance of women in shaping our country.
Cokie Roberts’ appearance will benefit the Library Foundation, whose mission is to enhance the collections, programs and services of the Broward County Library system beyond the means of public funding.
Tickets are $75. For details and tickets, call BPL Foundation at 954-357-7382 or visit www.bplfoundation.org/cokie-roberts.
