AmeriCorps Member to Join Local Female Leaders Program
Charleston, SC, April 30, 2016 --(PR.com)-- Today, the Islands Society announces the appointment of Careen Turner as a Community Engagement Specialist under the Local Female Leaders Program. Turner will now support the Islands Society’s efforts to recognize strong and empowered women around the world for their efforts to improve the quality of life in local island communities.
“I am really excited for this opportunity to reach out and learn more about our local female leaders all over the world. Recognizing talented and passionate women in island areas is important – not only to empower young women, but to also have others outside of these communities know about the work these women are doing,” Turner explains.
She continues, “Women are strong individuals who are constantly going above and beyond – not only as mothers, sisters, aunts and grandmothers but CEO’s, writers, designers, politicians, coaches… the list continues. These are the people that are helping change the world for the better and develop a generation of even stronger female leaders in the future. I am excited to work alongside the Society’s volunteers to uplift and encourage our Local Female Leaders.”
“Last year, our leadership team recognized that we need to create a new program team that is charged with developing and implementing our Local Female Leaders programs in islands communities around the world,” explains Eddie Walsh, President of the Islands Society. “These include our existing leadership recognition programs for women in Germany, Finland, Hawaii, Japan, Philippines, South Carolina, and the Caribbean. Bringing Caren on-board as the first member of that team therefore marks an important milestone for our organization.”
About Careen Turner
Turner currently serves as an AmeriCorps member in northern California. She plans to relocate to South Carolina in June to pursue her Master of Science degree in Nonprofit Management from the College of Professional Studies at Northeastern University. Turner received her B.A. in Communications from Hanover College in Southern Indiana.
Local Female Leaders Program
The Islands Society believes that local female leaders should be given a global platform to share their insights on how the health and well-being of girls and women can improved in the island communities. Through the Local Female Leaders (LFL) Program, the Islands Society recognizes a local female leader from a different island community each month. The Society then provides that individual with an opportunity to share her insights on how the health and well-being of girls and women can be improved in her own community based on her own life experiences.
