The Lit Exhibit: "It's Like an Art Gallery, But for Words"

Twenty-one year old Lana C. Marilyn, a queer black woman and self-published author celebrating the release of her debut book, combines literature, performance art, and a social atmosphere in The Lit Exhibit, the world's first ever writing gallery, which is set to premiere in Brooklyn on July 29, 2016.

Brooklyn, NY, May 09, 2016 --(PR.com)-- When it’s easier than ever to publish new writing and make it accessible online, how do you subvert the way readers take in these stories? Launch a writing gallery. On July 29, Brooklyn is set to premiere The Lit Exhibit, the world’s first ever writing gallery, an event where contemporary alt lit meets performance art through the exhibition of original writing alongside a series of interactive installations.

The project’s creation and development can be credited to self-published author Lana C, Marilyn, a young black woman in her early twenties. Inspired by the atmosphere and pulse of underground New York art shows, Marilyn hopes to provide an immersive literary experience that will invite audiences to reconsider how they consume, interact with and process literature.“It’s a way to highlight original work by upcoming and local writers,” Marilyn explains. “I’m interested in representing young and current voices, especially those of marginalized backgrounds.“

Hosted at Brooklyn Fete, an event space in East Flatbush, The Lit Exhibit will showcase fifteen select excerpts from Marilyn’s debut collection of memoirs and poetry, Wet Sand in An Hourglass: a self portrait in words. Magnet poetry installations, an exquisite corpse display, and lighthearted mad-libs will be just a few of the activities available for guests to participate in between enjoying complementary drinks and refreshments and vibing to music provided by DJ collective Bare Canvas Sounds.

When asked about the future of the project, Lana C. Marilyn declares intentions for the next incarnation of The Lit Exhibit to feature as many new and contemporary writers as possible.“I’d like to showcase word art or calligraphy and themes that reflect diverse lived experiences people have. I’m uninterested in traditional stories and more excited about elevating raw, experimental stuff by real people with something to say.” Marilyn’s approach aims to turn that content into an experience: “If it’s successful,” she adds, “I’d love to bring The Lit Exhibit to college campuses and other cities. My goal is to celebrate and share writing, but in a way that's fun.”

Tickets to The Lit Exhibit Tickets can be purchased online by visiting thelitexhibit.splashthat.com and are on sale now, starting at $5. All proceeds contribute directly to the overall funding and success of the show. The event is open to writers, readers, art lovers, and anyone interested in being part of a unique, immersive experience.
