Author Publishes Third Book
"McDowell’s First Girl," by D. Susan Rutz

Ms. Rutz interweaves her life story of a Virginia born girl who marries a marine stationed at Quantico, Virginia and is quickly swept away to live in another world across the country. In this 244 page book Ms. Rutz transposes her feelings of such a journey into her characters.
Emily McDowell is a wealthy Virginia debutante living in Alexandria when the city was still part of Washington D.C. She falls in love with a young officer from West Point headed for Ft. Scott Kansas on one of the first wagon trains west.
Her journey changes her from a young lady accustomed to tea parties into a pioneer and a military wife.
Ms. Rutz skillfully leads the reader along the long and tedious journey to the west allowing her characters to grow and change within the parameters of the story by experiencing the pain involved with leaving everything you know and love thousands of miles behind.
