Can We Afford More of the Same? Despite Prevention Drugs, Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting (PONV) Still Remains a Very Distressing Complication Following Surgery

Contrasting PONV implications for perianesthesia nurses, to improve the efficacy of PONV prevention

Tinton Falls, NJ, June 01, 2016 --(PR.com)-- Pressure Point Inc. - According to the company, high-risk PONV is still commonplace after surgery and it’s a huge fact that it affects individuals in multiple ways. Nausea and vomiting after surgery and anesthesia continues to play a predominant role as a painful emotional experience affecting a patient’s overall quality of life. Routine antiemetic (prophylactic) drug combinations have proven to be marginally effective. It is especially true following surgery when nausea implications can create a chaotic and emotional deficiency in high-risk postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) patients.

Joseph DiLustro, CEO, Pressure Point Inc., distributor of the Pressure Right® (non-drug) pressure stimulation adhesive strip, said: “The primary responsibility of Pressure Right, which is used prior to anesthesia, is to support patients with the integrity of a sustaining PONV shielding response for up to 72 hours after surgery.” DiLustro, added: “We recognize the big issue surrounding nausea is that it’s not just a secondary inconvenience after surgery, but a major short-term consequence on a patient’s quality of life.”

The science behind P6 pressure stimulation is one of neuro prevention based on Eastern medicine principles that has been perfected over the centuries. Once the stimulation is released within the body it brings on a shielding response that prevents nausea and vomiting.

Based on published data, in high-risk PONV patients, despite the use of prophylactic antiemetics, the incidence of postoperative nausea (PON) is still about 50% and 30% in postoperative vomiting (POV); while the incidence of post discharge nausea and vomiting (PDNV) is even higher.

In fact, additional (mg) dosages of prophylactic antiemetic combinations, such as Zofran® and Dexamethasone (from 4mg to 8 mg), can lead to an increase in patient side effects, such as, headaches, dizziness and in some cases, arrhythmia, offsetting any nominal short-term patient benefit.

However, the latest Cochrane review of P6 pressure stimulation PONV non-drug clinical studies, confirmed the prevention effectiveness of PONV with the use of P6 pressure stimulation. This review included almost 5,000 participants in various clinical trials. The Cochrane abstract recognized that PONV are known common complications following surgery and anesthesia. Furthermore, it stated that drugs to prevent PONV are only partially effective and may cause adverse effects. The report’s conclusion stated: “The use of P6 stimulation can reduce the risk of nausea and vomiting after surgery, with minimal side effects.”

Subsequently, Cedars Sinai physicians' (Los Angeles) randomized, sham-controlled, double-blind study concluded... “The adjunctive use of the disposable, noninvasive Pressure Right P6 stimulation strip enhanced the emetic efficacy of the most frequently used Zofran and Dexamethasone prophylactic antiemetic drug combination..."

The Pressure Right clinical study authored by Paul White, M.D., PhD, was peer-reviewed, and appeared in the Anesthesia & Analgesia Journal in June 2012. It further confirmed: “The adjunctive use of Pressure Right seemed to enhance patient satisfaction with their PONV management and quality of recovery at 48 hours after surgery.”

Pressure Right is registered with the FDA; and is attracting the attention and use at major US healthcare institutions as well as, internationally.

Pressure Point is offering a free testing toolkit; this includes product samples, P6 locator template and in-service instructions to optimize Pressure Right’s clinical effectiveness in reducing the risk of PONV.

DiLustro concluded: “Use of Pressure Right has been proven to offer patients quality improvements leading to superior levels of safety and patient satisfaction in PONV management care.”
