Packing Electronics in Portable Storage Safe and Sound

The National Portable Storage Association offers tips for safely storing electronics equipment.

Kansas City, MO, January 12, 2008 --(PR.com)-- From digital imaging to home networking and from high-performance theater gear to wireless technologies, the 2008 International Consumer Electronics Show demonstrated some of the hottest emerging technologies coming to market this year.

As the show winds down, retailers are planning to stock up on the next wave of innovative electronics gadgets. But for smaller wholesalers, retailers and outlets that order electronics items in bulk, finding a safe place to store large quantities can be a challenge. Containerized storage, also known as portable storage, is the answer. The National Portable Storage Association is offering tips on the best way to store electronics safely and securely.

"Put the largest boxes of equipment on the bottom of the portable storage unit," suggested John Finnessy, CMP, Executive Director the NPSA, a nonprofit membership association dedicated to the advancement of the portable storage industry. "Keep the smaller items up top. And make sure the area of the box that offers a description of its contents is facing outward so you can quickly determine what it contains."

The NPSA also recommends stacking the boxes right side up so the equipment is stowed in a natural position. If any of the boxes have been damaged in shipment from the manufacturer, consider double boxing the item and filling any gaps with bubble wrap or antistatic packing material to keep the equipment from moving. If you are storing multiple types of electronics, such as computers, televisions and stereos, designate different areas of your portable storage unit for each product for easy recall. Adding shelves and racks lets you organize smaller boxes conveniently.

"Keep in mind that CDs and software can't take the heat," said NPSA Operations Manager Joel Rathbone. "If you are storing media for use in electronics devices, you will want to choose an air conditioned portable storage unit. And be sure not to store chemicals or other materials that could damage your electronics inventory if they spill."
