Texas’ Only LGBTQA Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Gaming Convention Sets Dates for 2017
HavenCon offers gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, questioning and allied community members a fun, safe haven filled with gaming experiences, geek activities, incredible artwork, and pop culture panels from industry professionals and local talents.
Austin, TX, June 04, 2016 --(PR.com)-- HavenCon is proud to announce its' third annual convention will be moving to a new venue, The Double Tree Hilton in North Austin, Texas on April 28th-30th of 2017. Fundraising efforts raise 52% of goal in under 48 hours. HavenCon’s second convention, which took place in April, showed a 30% growth with nearly 1400 attendees. Gaming tournaments, including the popular "Celebrity Poker Match" which raised over $1700 for TransLifeLine.org, a cosplay contest, dozens of vendors and artists, and local and national industry panelists—including Legend of Korra star Janet Varney and Lead Editor of Bioware Karin Weekes helped make the second year even more successful than the first.
“Our second year was fantastic, attendance wise even better than our first, and its made me feel that there's not only a want, but a need for this type of event here in Texas,” said Shane Brown, founder of HavenCon. “Although Texas is no stranger to comic book and gaming conventions, this is the first and only one the state has specifically for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, questioning and allied (LGBTQ-A) geek and gamer community.”
Brown added, “Year Three is going to be even better than the first two with our new hotel space and our theme of 'That's So Retro.' People are already having a lot of fun with the theme, coming up with costume ideas and we're definitely looking forward to the fun activites we can put together centered on the 70's, 80's and 90's nostalgic geek stuff.”
HavenCon also focuses on the queer creators at home in Texas and abroad. Showcasing LGBT+ and ally artists, vendors and other creators.
Regarding the conventions artists and vendors, Brown said: "It's important to us that LGBT+ and other minority creators have a space to sell what they love to create. We're able to bring a large group of people with common interests together and it only make sense that queer creators are there to show off their work and gain the recognition they deserve. Recognition that may not always be found at more main stream events."
HavenCon is currently running its 2017 fundraiser to secure the new venue and bring on more special guests. Rewards for contributing include discounted passes and other items. For more information or to donate, visit HavenConTx.com.
