"Traces" Installation at Gettysburg National Military Park
Gettysburg, PA, June 04, 2016 --(PR.com)-- The National Parks Arts Foundation (NPAF), in cooperation with the National Park Service and The Gettysburg Foundation, presents a work of temporary installation art at Gettysburg National Military Park by current NPAF artist in residence, Marlene Alt.
The piece, which is named Traces: A Gathering Up, will be on display in a dedicated area outdoors at the Gettysburg NMP Visitor’s Center from Monday, June 6 until Friday, June 10.
From July 1 to July 3, 1863 over 1,000 horses and mules were killed in the fighting that raged across the Gettysburg battlefield. These animals, fighting in an army they did not join, and in a conflict they did not begin, represent but a fraction of the over 1 million whose lives were claimed by the American Civil War.
This sited sculpture, made of cast wax, found metal objects, and wood, pays silent tribute to these valiant and innocent victims of the battle. May it serve as a reminder of the enormous cost of the war that was waged here a century and a half ago, and stand witness with the other memorials and monuments on the hallowed ground of the Gettysburg battlefield.
