Historic Schooner Spike Africa is Available for Booking Burials at Sea

Schooners North’s historic 80-foot wooden schooner comes out of a 7-year restoration period and is now available for booking respectful burial at sea ceremonies.

Friday Harbor, WA, June 08, 2016 --(PR.com)-- Schooners North’s historic 80-foot wooden schooner, Spike Africa comes out of a 7-year restoration period and is now available for booking respectful burial at sea ceremonies. Final farewells are always a sensitive period for surviving members of the family, but it is all one can do to make the experience positive to honor the memory of the deceased. Aboard the Spike Africa, passengers can lay the remains of their loved ones at their final resting place in a serene environment during the service.

The Spike Africa is a one-of-a-kind “tall ship” built forty years ago by Bob Sloan, a widely-known seaman who spent a lifetime sailing throughout the Pacific. He built the ship to reflect the regal appearance of schooners from centuries past, giving it its classic, elegant look. Today, Spike Africa has been fully restored and revamped to ensure that it holds up to today’s standards for sailing and so its passengers have every luxury and comfort on board. This makes it an ideal vessel for burials at sea.

Finding a suitable burial site is perhaps the biggest concern when it comes to arranging such ceremonies. Federal regulations state that ceremonies must be performed at a minimum of three nautical miles from land. This is so that it would not cause any disruption or have any detrimental effects to nearby communities. Knowing this, Schooners North chooses to hold ceremonies at the Haro Strait. The location lies between the San Juan Islands and Vancouver Island. Conveniently, travel by scheduled airline to our home port of picturesque Friday Harbor is just a half-hour flight from Seattle-Tacoma Airport.

Schooners North can assist with all the arrangements to help allow this ceremony to be a true life-celebration for friends and family members.
