Smart LiDAR Sensor Patent Issued to Facet Technology
Autonomous vehicle navigation systems that utilize smart sensors will allow for distributed processing within the vehicle and will dramatically reduce the graphics horsepower required for the navigation control unit. Smart sensors bring functionality to the sensor like edge detection, corner detection, 3D segmentation, normal vector determination for all objects, and object identification for localization functions.
Minneapolis, MN, June 08, 2016 --(PR.com)-- US Patent Issued to Facet Technology Corp. for Smart Sensors for Autopilot and Autonomous Vehicles
The US Patent and Trademark Office today issued US Patent No. 9,360,554 to Facet Technology Corp. titled Methods and Apparatus for Object Detection and Identification in a Multiple Detector LiDAR Array. The issued patent is the second of four innovative technology families that make up Facet’s smart sensor intellectual property.
The smart sensor families add to Facet Technology Corp.’s patent portfolio that addresses technology and capabilities in the areas of image processing, image analysis, database creation, vehicle navigation, and roadway asset identification and assessment.
Jamie Retterath, Facet Technology Corp.’s CTO, stated: “We are pleased to add the first of many smart sensor patents to our portfolio. The smart sensor family builds on our over ten years of experience in building and deploying mission critical sensors for the assessment of roadways.”
Mapping-grade and survey-grade sensors are designed and built for offline processing and non-real-time use. These non-intelligent sensors create significant processing burdens when utilized in real time. Autonomous vehicle control is the ultimate real-time 3D mapping application. The commercialization and mass deployment of Facet smart sensor technology will significantly reduce the processing requirements for next-generation autonomous navigation systems.
Facet is working with select OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers for the commercialization of customized versions of the smart sensors for future autonomous navigation systems. For more information, visit www.facet-tech.com or contact Facet Technology Corp. at 952-944-1839.
