Desert Landscaping is Elevated to an Art in Southern Nevada's ASCAYA Community
Hillside collection of luxury home sites becoming known for its commitment to desert landscaping and Desert Contemporary architecture.

The developer has hired seven of the country’s top architecture firms to create Inspiration Homes that will be open for the public and prospective clients to draw design inspiration from…and a $25 million clubhouse is being built in the same style. ASCAYA’s landscaping was designed by the team at Southwick Landscape Architects of Las Vegas. Led by Stan Southwick, the team incorporated both native and desert adaptive vegetation throughout the community…which is being modeled as a shining example of the beauty in desert plants and trees.
“The inspiration for the landscaping at ASCAYA comes directly from the natural terrain and flora in which the community sits,” said Matt Durham of Southwick Landscape Architects. “Everything from the natural patina of the rocks to the barrel cacti perched on the hillsides has dictated our design of both the ASCAYA clubhouse and public areas. ASCAYA is a unique place…with a picture perfect view of the Las Vegas valley. We wanted to capture that feeling and inspire residents who are designing their own homes. At ASCAYA, you will see more than 80 species of native and desert adaptive trees, shrubs, vines, cacti and succulents.”
ASCAYA, a luxury community of 313 homesites that meander through Henderson’s McCullough range, hosts a variety of elevations and vantage points. The dark native rocks of its retaining walls give it a distinct visage and its landscape team worked to honor the beauty of the desert through its vegetation.
“This is a community that is true to its environment,” said Stan Southwick, principal of Southwick Landscape Architects. “There are no sidewalks, just stabilized rock trails that connect residents with community amenities and each other. Salvaged boulders are incorporated throughout the trail in place of standard seating benches. And both native and desert adaptive plants create a seamless transition with the surrounding desert.”
Native plants incorporated at ASCAYA include the popular Creosote, Burr Sage and Mojave Yucca. Brittlebush and a variety of cacti are also seen throughout the community. Desert adaptive trees like the Mesquite, Palo Verde and Desert Willow provide color and shade at ASCAYA. “A tree we are using at ASCAYA that is beautiful but not as widely used is the Texas Mountain Laurel,” said Southwick. “It almost doesn’t look like a desert tree. It is green all year long and has clusters of purple flowers. Most developments don’t use them because they grow more slowly than some of the others.”
According to Durham, the biggest trend in desert landscaping is sustainability. “Working in harmony with the environment is key to this,” he said. “Many of the native plants used at ASCAYA were either collected directly from other construction sites around town or grown from seeds collected in these areas,” he said.
“Over 60 percent of ASCAYA’s landscaping is native material that requires absolutely no irrigation or watering,” said Southwick. “The rest is desert adaptive, which uses very little irrigation and grows well in the wind, heat and low humidity here in Southern Nevada.”
The clubhouse will include a resort-style pool that Marques said will rival resorts on the Las Vegas Strip. A large pool will be accompanied by a separate lap swimming area, pool-side cabanas and event lawn. The Clubhouse will feature a fitness area, movement studio, tennis courts and a children’s playroom, along with extensive gathering rooms and socializing areas.
ASCAYA recently completed the landscaping on its streets and common areas. Its $25 million clubhouse, currently under construction, will also feature desert landscaping designs.
The clubhouse joins two of the community’s seven Inspiration Homes under construction with an additional three Inspiration Homes expected to start construction by early Spring. ASCAYA’s Inspiration Homes are being designed by some of the country’s foremost luxury residential architects including Marmol Radziner, Richard Meier and Partners, and SB Architects. “These homes will showcase the unique architectural and design opportunities here at ASCAYA,” said Darin Marques, ASCAYA’s sales manager.
ASCAYA also has five private residences currently under construction with the first home scheduled for completion next month. “We now have a total of ten residences and the clubhouse under construction,” said Marques.
