MBD Celebrates the Opening of Smarter Toddler Nursery & Preschool® in Financial District
Mark Borowski Design, Inc. (MBD) Showcases Distinctive Design at Smarter Toddler’s New Financial District Location
New York, NY, June 17, 2016 --(PR.com)-- Mark Borowski Design, Inc. (MBD) celebrated today the opening of Smarter Toddler Nursery & Preschool® in the Financial District, a leading childcare and early childhood education provider in NYC since 2003. The firm served as the architect for the 8,200 square foot ground retail space, located on the corner of John Street and Cliff Street, at Rockrose’s 99 John Deco Loft condominium building in the Financial District.
MBD was tasked with transforming the former Duane Reade Pharmacy space into Smarter Toddler’s third Manhattan location. In collaboration with artist and Creative Director, R. Lloyd Ming, MBD designed state-of-the-art facilities and classrooms that embodied the school’s brand image and its philosophy that the environment is integral to early childhood education.
“This project signals our commitment to creating a design that simultaneously reflects Smarter Toddler’s distinctive brand, while incorporating existing characteristics of the building’s art deco design and the urban context of the Financial District neighborhood,” said MBD President, Mark Borowski. “We wanted to maintain the grandeur, brightness and openness of the space while creating a warm, inviting environment. This was done with a lot of creative manipulation of the space and geometry. The behavior of light also guided many decisions, varying depending on the amount of natural light or our need for artificial light sources.”
“This was a very unique project and there were a lot of challenges that we had to work through including its landmark status. Also, being a ground level space, we had to plan around the large support columns throughout to maintain the space’s fluidity. The design’s effectiveness is apparent as the columns are now indiscernible,” said Mr. Borowski. “The floorplan is also really unique being circular vs rectangular. The entrance to the school is at a 45 degree angle and opens up into this spectacular atrium. The rest of the space is made up of a circular hallway lined with classrooms and enclosing the courtyard.”
“A wall of eleven-foot windows bring in an abundance of natural light which creates this dynamic interplay of light and color. Spaces with limited natural lighting provide innovative faux window treatments that are illuminated from within,” said school spokesperson, Reanne Agbayani. “A great deal of consideration went into the color palette for the school. There is a careful blend of space, color and lighting meant to create a warm, nurturing learning environment. Every detail is purposeful, a reflection of the attention to detail and exacting standards of the Smarter Toddler brand.”
