Covestro Provides Key Material for Net-Zero Energy Home at 2016 PCBC Show
A new dwelling concept that combines the economy and simplicity of tiny house living with cutting edge building science, the Arc House is a home that is smart, self-sufficient, and compact. A net-zero home that is ready for anything - and that is beautiful and elegant, too.
Spring, TX, June 19, 2016 --(PR.com)-- Covestro LLC is collaborating with Shelter Dynamics on a sustainable home intended to showcase new concepts for efficient building and sustainability. The Arc House will be prominently displayed at the main entrance to the 2016 PCBC Show in San Francisco June 22-23, with additional support from Green Builder Media. The home is the newest in Green Builder’s VISION House series.
The Arc House totals 423 square feet versus 2,657 square feet, the average size of new homes built today. The Arc House is designed to achieve net-zero energy usage with the addition of photovoltaic panels. Covestro donated Bayseal® Closed-cell (CCX) spray polyurethane foam (SPF) insulation and Bayblock® elastomeric coating for the home, and provided building envelope consulting. USI, a Covestro-accredited contractor, installed the insulation and coating.
The hybrid insulation system of polyiso board, Bayseal CCX SPF, plywood and Bayblock coating helps prevent air leakage. The Bayblock coating, a fluid-applied membrane, meets EnergyStar reflectance criteria and creates a continuous, seamless coating around the entire home. Bayblock coating is a 100% acrylic coating, making it less susceptible to water penetration and highly resistant to UV-degradation. It becomes fully adhered when applied.
Jim Gregory, founder of Shelter Dynamics, is responsible for design and construction oversight of the Arc House. The home has a unique, curvilinear form reminiscent of boat building, one of Gregory’s skills. His goal with such energy efficient pod homes is to create next generation housing.
“The changing and predicted demographics of today’s homeowners is influencing the housing markets, and traditional homebuilding is not responding,” Gregory explains. “Empty nesters don’t want giant homes, the middle class can no longer afford the ‘McMansions’ that were overbuilt in the 80s and 90s, and Millennials crave more of community experience. The Arc House is efficient, affordable and beautiful. It can be easily grouped like a traditional housing development, or can be placed remotely for the homeowner who wants isolation and off-grid living.”
Shelter Dynamics estimates starting prices on similar pod homes will be $120,000 to $140,000. The Arc House will allow people to own a small home rather than rent.
“This is an exciting opportunity for us, to be part of a showcase home that will exemplify two of the biggest trends in homebuilding today – efficient and small. Beyond current trends, we appreciate that Jim is thinking about the big picture of housing. Working with trailblazers like Shelter Dynamics aligns perfectly with the Covestro vision of inspiring innovation through products and technologies that benefit society,” says Jeremy Parker, national sales manager for Covestro spray insulation and roofing systems.
The home will be open for tours during PCBC 2016 expo hours. Covestro will be located in booth #127 in the exhibit hall.
