The Birches Kick Off Summer with 2nd Annual Daisy-Q
Clarendon Hills, IL, June 19, 2016 --(PR.com)-- On June 15, The Birches Assisted Living in Clarendon Hills, Ill. kicked off summer with its second annual Daisy-Q - a backyard barbecue celebrating the history of Clarendon Hills.
Birches residents, associates and Clarendon Hills community members attended the event in The Birches’ outdoor courtyard, which included a barbecued lunch and a visit from the Good Humor Ice Cream Truck.
“It was a classic beginning of summer barbecue,” said Birches’ Community Liaison and coordinator of the event Robin Lacine. “Everyone enjoyed grilling outside in the hot summer weather. And, of course, the Good Humor Ice Cream Truck was a hit! It was just like being a kid again.”
Lacine created the event in 2015 to acknowledge the rich history of Clarendon Hills. Since The Birches Assisted Living has been a Clarendon Hills-based business for over 15 years, she thought the “Daisy-Q” was a perfect way to bring Clarendon Hills residents and business owners together to celebrate the community they all share.
“Clarendon Hills has a very unique history and a special connection to daisies that not everyone is aware of,” said Lacine. “So I thought this was a great way to usher in Clarendon Hills’ yearly celebration of the daisy, which will continue this weekend at the village’s annual street festival ‘Daisy Days.’”
Clarendon Hills does indeed have a very special connection to the daisy - one that can be traced back to its founding in the mid-nineteenth century.
In the 1870s, Clarendon Hills founding father Henry C. Middaugh accidentally seeded his 270 acre plot with daisy seed instead of grass seed, resulting in a field filled with daisies. The daisies spread quickly to other areas of the town, and although Middaugh was frustrated by his mistake, everyone in the town (including Middaugh) thought the result was quite beautiful. At one point, the town even changed its name to “Daisy Fields” and attracted throngs of tourists who came to pick the daisies.
During The Birches’ first “Daisy -Q” in 2015, the assisted living community planted a daisy field in honor of the village’s daisy-filled history. Now community members can enjoy the beautiful daisies that represent a vital piece of Clarendon Hills history.
“It’s important to stay connected to your history and your community,” said Lacine. “That’s what the Daisy-Q is all about. The Birches is proud to be part of the wonderful village of Clarendon Hills, and we want to celebrate that.”
