Explore World Through Philosophy of Dual Morality Presented in New Book by Martin Fritz
Dog Ear Publishing reviews a new book that integrates the study of history, politics, philosophy, and science, which was described in a Kirkus book review as "dazzlingly bright," "engrossing" and "mind-expanding."
Mount Olive, NC, June 22, 2016 --(PR.com)-- What is right and what is wrong, and how does morality come about? Martin Fritz explores these and other questions in his new book, released by Dog Ear Publishing. He investigates concepts like duty, individuality, goodness, and what people mean by truth. Or, as the author writes in the introduction, the book is an effort to understand what morality is, why it is, how it has come about, and where it is likely to go tomorrow.
In a few generations, modern society has changed its stance on issues that have been around for centuries, Fritz notes. For instance, leaders all over the western world are calling for the elimination of the death penalty, and gay marriage and homosexual relationships, behaviors that would have led to prison sentences in many nations not that long ago, are accepted, he writes. The book explains the complex and often contradictory nature of human action through a philosophical theory Fritz calls Dual Morality. Building on the insights of politicians, social activists, scientists, philosophers, journalists, novelists and popular writers from throughout history and around the world, he creates a unified system of moral understanding.
“Our Human Herds: The Philosophy of Dual Morality and a Theory of Moral Evolution” explores the fundamental issues of morality: sex, violence, duty, compassion, love, loyalty, and material security. For example, the author writes, “Controlling sex and the ramifications which spring from it has always occupied a center stage in moral discussion.” Relationships are central to the concept of right. Morality cannot exist in a vacuum. The very survival of a species depends on morality – on making the right decisions. Historically, philosophers have tried to answer questions of right and wrong through single consistent moral systems, commandments, Utility Theories, or Golden Rule type principles. But, as the book claims, they always fell short of explaining how the world works.
The book “Our Human Herds” proposes that what exists within humans are two distinct moral codes: Two patterns of moral understanding which stem from the dual possibility that either huaman are safe and there is enough for all to go around, or humans are in danger and there is not enough for everyone. As Fritz writes, “Dual Morality has insured we are prepared to act rightly in either circumstance. Relative plenty and safety, or relative scarcity and danger, is the linchpin around which all of cultural history unfolds.”
Fritz has owned businesses and worked for government, living and traveling in Egypt, France, Canada, Britain, Saudi Arabia, Italy and a dozen states in the United States. His new book stemmed from work he did on creating a handbook for parents to ask questions to help guide their children in how to think about difficult topics and to show questions and problems might have more than one answer or solution.
