Military Veteran, Retired Detective Sergeant to Challenge Incumbent for 124 Assembly District Seat in New York
Southern Tier native, Bill Batrowny, announces his candidacy for the Assembly Seat that covers Tioga County, most of Chemung County and the Town of Maine in Broome County.
Elmira, NY, June 22, 2016 --(PR.com)-- In an announcement at the American Legion on Thursday evening, Elmira resident and Democratic candidate, Bill Batrowny announced the kickoff of his campaign to unseat the three term incumbent Chris Friend. The District includes most of Chemung County, all of Tioga County, and the Town of Maine in Broome County.
“We face challenges in rebuilding our region. The lift is heavy, but it is not impossible. I look forward to getting out to every corner of the Southern Tier to meet with residents and discuss these issues and potential solutions as we move forward,” Batrowny said in a statement Thursday.
Batrowny was born in Elmira, NY and served over two decades in law enforcement, retiring as a Detective Sergeant for the City of Elmira. He is also a United States Military Veteran and former small business owner.
During his announcement, Batrowny highlighted some of the major issues he is prepared to tackle in Albany. “Bringing jobs back to the Southern Tier has to be a top priority,” he said.
“We continue to see our young people move away for better opportunities. Shops that were once the fabric of our communities are closing their doors all throughout the region. We have to do better, and together, we will.”
His plan is to focus on providing resources for entrepreneurs to build out new ideas and supplement already established employers with the tools to remain competitive and viable long term in the region. The resources exist,” Batrowny said. “We need strong leadership to ensure they are directed to the Southern Tier.”
He discussed the importance of providing quality education for our young people. “Our public schools and teachers are constantly asked to do more with less. When we shortchange our teachers and centers for learning, we are doing the same to our youth.”
In his announcement, Batrowny also referenced the dark cloud of corruption in Albany and the damaging effects on regions like Southern Tier. “The people who call this state home deserve better. Our region deserves better. With your help, we will clean up the mess in our state capital and bring tangible results back home.”
With a career of serving the Southern Tier on his resume and a strong campaign team of staff and volunteers, Batrowny appears to be a serious challenger to the three term incumbent, Chris Friend.
A representative from the Batrowny campaign told reporters they plan to open a campaign headquarters in the District within the next few weeks.
