NSC Science Lecturer Completes Mental Health First Aid Course

Oswestry, United Kingdom, July 06, 2016 --(PR.com)-- One of North Shropshire College’s (NSC) science lecturers has attended a Mental Health First Aid course in Liverpool hosted by Merseyside Youth Association and Mental Health and First Aid England.

Shôn Prebble, science lecturer at NSC’s Oswestry Campus, commented, "Mental health is a topic that has had a lot of attention recently and rightly so. We are always learning more and more about mental health and it’s important that we, as teachers, are as up to date as we can be in order to support our learners."

Shôn continued, "I’ve always had an interest in mental health and how best to support students and so I jumped at the chance to go to Liverpool for this course. We covered a range of topics, from eating disorders to depression and psychosis. It was also really inspiring to meet other teachers and youth workers and discuss how they support young people. North Shropshire College prides itself on the pastoral care that we offer our students and this just adds to the already extensive support that we offer."

Amanda Paterson, Pastoral Learning Mentor, commented, "Having students with diagnosable mental health conditions, staff need to provide specific support for their complex needs. We are not mental health specialists but training in Mental Health equips staff to deal with situations in a more informed way."
