Skylark English for Babies is a multi-sensory toolkit providing a fun, interaction-based method for meaningful language learning. Developed in Cambridge with the help of British education and language specialists, the beautifully made resource has been created to inspire little learners in a home environment.
Skylark Learning’s Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign aims to bring Skylark English for Babies to a new audience: parents who have some knowledge of English and who want support in raising their child bilingual.
What is Skylark English for Babies?
“This is an innovative product, developed in Cambridge especially for families where English is a second language,” says Donna Powell, Product Development Manager at Skylark Learning. “We know how important it is to introduce a foreign language to your child early on: the earlier you start, the easier it will be for you and them! That’s why we have designed this product for use with children from birth.”
The set includes:
· A unique Skylark puppet to engage and motivate children through imaginative learning.
· A fantastic collection of 12 original storybooks helps children hear the target words set in real language.
· A Word Book with colourful illustrations to engage children and introduce focus vocabulary.
· 218 play cards and a huge play board to help children associate English words with the world around them.
· 12 beautiful songs for parents to sing with their child.
· An Activity Book with more than 80 game-based activities to practise the target language in a fun way while developing other important skills.
· A Parent’s Guide with instructions, dictionaries and a guide to English grammar.
· Online audio recorded by a native British English speaker and full interactive support.
How does it work?
At the heart of Skylark English for Babies is a number of target words that are repeated throughout the material – in activities, songs and storybooks – providing hundreds of opportunities to use these words in real-life contexts. The Skylark Learning methodology focuses on learning through meaningful play, which happens naturally as parents and children communicate in everyday situations. This fully individualised, flexible learning will suit any child, and parents with any level of English. Tailor-made for families, Skylark English uses our unique Skylark puppet to motivate children through imaginative learning, while our storybooks and songs help children hear the target words set in real language, including all the phonemes of the English language.
Start early
Skylark English is designed to be used with your child from birth, ensuring that your child hears the full range of English phonemes as early as possible, to give them the best chance of being able to pick up the language naturally. Very young babies can detect and use the sounds that make up all the languages in the world, but by 12 months, they have difficulty distinguishing between the sounds of languages they have not been frequently exposed to. Research also shows that brain circuits associated with language are most flexible before the age of four, so learning a second language before this age offers the best chance of becoming fluent.

“We began working on this project 3 years ago,” says Donna Powell. “Skylark English first appeared in a Russian version about 16 months ago. The reviews have been excellent and it was fantastic for us to see how much families enjoyed using the product. We now want to raise money to bring an English version to market. Aimed at parents with some knowledge of English, this product will develop their child’s language skills at a very early stage.”
