Derrick Grubbs Shares Ups, Downs of Life in and Out of Ballparks in His New Book
Dog Ear Publishing reviews a new book about faith, fate and the ability to forgive and the author’s quest to understand the true meaning of each. Finding and losing love but knowing throughout that he has the love of family, the author offers an intimate portrait of his triumphs and disappointments.
Arlington, TX, July 28, 2016 --(PR.com)-- Many a young person dreams of working in the world of sports, but few have the opportunity to make that dream come true. A new book released by Dog Ear Publishing shares one man’s story from humble beginnings as an equipment manager of his school’s eighth-grade football team to management positions in professional baseball and Division 1 college athletics.
In “No Gold Watch: A Life Outside the Lines,” Derrick Grubbs writes candidly of his life, beginning in a small town in Texas through his more than 40 years of working in the world of sports. From an early fascination with a new religion of sorts – major league baseball – would spring the inspiration for his eventual career in professional and collegiate sports.
This intriguing memoir is just as much a story about Grubbs as the people who affect his life, from his loving family members to friends and mentors he encounters on his journey through life. Grubbs pulls no punches, writing candidly about his triumphs and his disappointments, whether personal or professional. The book reads like a virtual “Who’s Who” of sports, particularly professional and college baseball as well as those who work their magic behind the scenes.
As Kirkus Reviews writes: “Readers with a fascination for sports, Texas athletes in particular, should love Grubbs’ insider view into college and professional teams, which he writes about clearly and passionately.”
This is the first book for Grubbs, who has worked in the sports industry for more than four decades. The Bryan, Texas, native is an associate athletic director at the University of Texas at Arlington but also has worked in college athletics at Texas A&M University and the University of Texas at Austin. Grubbs has been a regular speaker at sports and entertainment seminars and events.
He worked for nearly twenty years with minor league baseball clubs in several cities and was with the Houston Astros in 1993 and 1994. He attended Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, earning a bachelor’s degree in journalism with a minor in psychology. Grubbs’ career has ranged from being a copy editor and sports information director to serving as a radio broadcaster, public address announcer, licensed pyrotechnician and event producer.
