This book has received praise from critics and ordinary readers alike. Stanley P. Baldwin, freelance editor and co-author of J.R.R. Tolkien: His Life and Works, says, "[The Cloud of Doom is] a highly compelling story... The dialogue is superb, and the narrative is a lot of fun as well as being intellectually intriguing." John Keenan, Book Review Editor of The Omaha World-Herald calls it, "... a fast-moving sci-fi adventure that has serious points to make, as well."

The adventure begins when, in the near future, a glowing, blue-white cloud, later labeled "the cloud of doom" by the media, appears in the night sky all around the earth. This threat from outer space causes a world-wide panic, exposing and intensifying society's flaws, the "serious points" Mr. Keenan refers to. The expected end of time becomes an excuse for rioting and anarchy. Among the social lesions brought to light are inhumane and abusive religious practices, corrupt and irrational policies in government and business and the horrendous consequences of our desecration of earth's ecosystems. And although social criticism is this book's main thrust, it has something for everyone.

The characters are striking and complex. We come away feeling either that we've already met many of them or wish we could or are glad we haven't. But not all of them keep their feet on the ground.

For science fiction junkies, there are adventures on earth's colonized moon, on Jupiter's icy moon Europa and on an artificial satellite used to detect threats from meteors and comets. And, of course, there is the menace from that glowing apparition in the night sky. However, you will have to read the book for yourself to learn what it really is.
