MasterPeace Organizes Painting 30 Walls Simultaneously on Peace Day, Marking It One of the Biggest Art Projects of Its Kind
MasterPeace, UN- awarded grassroots peace movement, prepares ‘Walls of Connection’ as this year’s International Day of Peace celebration, creating art murals in 30 cities around the world including many in conflict areas, and transforming walls originally used for separating, countries, communities, and neighborhoods into walls of connection.
MasterPeace is inviting local artists in participating cities to paint the dividing walls into beautiful masterpieces. All the way from Mexico City to Kabul, from Cape Coast to Kathmandu and Texas, USA, MasterPeace offers local communities the opportunity to bridge divides and brings thousands of people together to mark a historic celebration of Peace Day.
Walls comes with powerful stories, such as the wall in Kabul which witnessed a bombing few months ago where lots of people lost their lives, the local artists are coming together to transform the color of blood to a positive message, in Ludberg, Croatia the wall is next to a bombed synagogue in World War ll.
Some well-known names in the world of art are joining the project, streetart.today, the Amsterdam-based leading street art platform as well as some well known artists such as the Georgian famous young artist in the Caucasus region Tornike Melikidze, (aka Jokonda) and the up & coming Croatian artist Martin Hrastić.
The biggest art project of its kind, 30 walls will be painted at the same time, as the project is expected to bring together 30 cities around the world, involving 1000+ muralists, artists and performers together with mobilization of over 10,000 Active peace-builders & volunteers and millions in outreach.
“As more politicians hint at or actually build more walls, ‘Walls of Connection’ comes as a peace message from the grassroots that walls will be transformed through art and creativity into a positive symbol that brings communities together,” said Raghda El Halawany, the Project Manager.
“The project purpose is not destroying walls, but knocking them down mentally and transforming them into tools that connect rather than separate and activate a public discussion over it,” El Halawany added.
According to the latest studies by the French-based newspaper ‘Courier International,’ there were only 12 walls at the time of the Berlin wall’s collapse, while now more than 77 countries have erected fences on their borders. That's 1/3rd of the entire world.
“Walls don’t work,” stated Elisabeth Vallet, author of the prominent book Borders, Fences and Walls to MasterPeace on the impact of walls and borders of making areas around them more dangerous with attracting trafficking, illegal immigration and vandalism rather than making areas safer.
‘Walls of Connection’ will be working on turning walls of separation into walls of connection, the criteria is that the walls must have been built with the intent for separation or with negative connotation in the community. These walls will be turned into beautiful art pieces, with every wall featuring a shared element that is connected to the other designs across the 30 cities.
MasterPeace launches an open call for artists, art groups, art schools, street artists, muralists, art enthusiasts and urbanists to join our MasterPeace teams around the world to create together this huge art project and start the conversation on borders and walls globally.
