Families, Staff Say Residents do Well at Applewood Our House's Small, Residential, Memory Care Homes
Company has opened four group homes in five years in metro Denver.
Golden, CO, September 02, 2016 --(PR.com)-- For Brian Tinker and his family, knowing their Mom was going to be treated just like family was the most important factor in selecting a long-term care facility.
“We had in-home care for several years when her Alzheimer’s worsened but three years ago, we realized she needed 24-hour care,” explains Tinker. “We looked around where she was living in New York but couldn’t find any smaller group homes within neighborhoods so we moved her to Applewood Our House in Golden.”
Tinker had known Applewood Our House Owner Alan Wyngarden for many years and also was the builder/remodeler for all four of Wyngarden’s residential assisted living homes. “Alan and his staff bring in many extra services, such as music, activities and footcare, and are always asking families what else they can do for their residents,” he adds.
“My Mom has done well there for three years,” Tinker says. “When she had to be hospitalized for a week last year, some of the Our House staff came and sat with her at the hospital when I couldn’t be there—they truly went above and beyond.”
Mary Harrison has been one of the Our House caregivers for the past two years. “I look forward to coming to work,” Harrison says. “I’ve worked at other facilities but what stands out the most for me is that all of us love our residents and treat them like our own family.”
Applewood Our House has 24/7 care and a 1 to 6 ratio of caregivers to residents. “This staff ratio allows us to spend more time with each resident and help them with things such as personal grooming and special foods,” Harrison says. “I’m proud to work here and families tell me they feel secure with having their family members living here. We can help people with severe behaviors and typically they do better once they live with us for a while.”
Ed Sheppard lives in the same neighborhood as the Lakewood Our House so when he needed a memory care home for his Dad and Aunt, Our House was the natural choice. “Their safety and their quality of life were very important to us, and we feel the staff delivers unbelievably good care,” he explains. “We also like the homey setting versus other larger, institutional-feeling facilities.”
Sheppard, who recently retired from Jefferson County, enjoys being around the residents so much that he is now a driver for Our House for the many field trips and activities planned outside of the homes. Activities include trips to museums, fishing, the circus, the dollar store, parks, swimming at the recreation center, and other meaningful activities.
