Matthew Barker, Managing Director of the Barker Group, says, “For some years I have been researching the best made bed linen in the World.
“As time has passed it has become more and more apparent that the majority of suppliers and retailers in the UK are sourcing cotton and woven products from more diverse and less qualified market places in order to retain their margins as the cost of cotton has risen.
“My search took me ultimately to Southern India where, to the best of my knowledge, some of the finest cotton is grown and the best weaving exists. After all, it was from this region that England’s cotton industry learnt its trade in the late 1600’s and early 1700’s.”
Quality & Traceability
By understanding and deconstructing the process behind the creation of fine quality woven cotton and tailored bed linen Barker were able to determine the quality of the products chosen to bring to the market. All Barker bed linen fulfils the high standards as the company has become involved with the cotton growers, spinners and weavers and undertakes their own tailoring in the same region.
The result is a high quality, fully traceable, controlled and vertically aligned manufacturing process that Barker believes does not exist anywhere else in the world.
Tried and Tested
All bed linen styles that are chosen by the Barker Collection have been tested in commercial laundry conditions. An item from each style is washed and ironed a minimum of 40 times in line with the care label instructions. Standard domestic detergents are used to mirror domestic conditions however the finishing is carried out by industrial laundry finishing equipment which will thoroughly test an items construction durability and ability to keep its shape.
The manufacturing process is an important factor in the items ability to keep its shape after laundering. Quite apart from the strength and durability of the stitching, the cutting, tearing and matching up of two pieces of fabric that make a duvet cover or pillow case is crucial to ensure that items retain their shape over years of use. After just one launder the fabric will relax and poorly made items will appear to twist and are impossible to rectify with ironing.
Stain removal ability is invariably determined by the quality of the yarn used in weaving and the thread count; the higher the thread count, the tighter the weave. The tighter the weave, the harder it is to remove established stains without the use of aggressive detergents. The lifetime of bed linen can only be determined by the amount and nature of use an item is subjected to, but all the bed linen in the Barker Collection is designed to last many years under normal conditions and with regular laundering.
The Barker Group consists of five divisions; Barker Laundry, Barker Dry Cleaning, Barker Collars, Barker Bridal and The Barker Collection.
