An excerpt of Dale Earnhardt, Jr.’s 19 minute news conference: Dale, Jr. was asked, “Are you still playing drums?”

He said, “I got a set still set up. I haven’t messed with it in a while because I’m terrible and you know what happened was, this is the honest truth, I had to quit playing the drums because every time at a bar everybody would try, somebody would go up to the guy in the band or something and say, ‘Hey, Dale, Jr. plays drums’ and next song they’d say ‘Hey Dale, Jr. come on up here and play drums.’

“And you can’t say no, everybody booing if you say no. So I just like quit playin’ so hopefully everyone would forget that I play and wouldn’t be dragin’ me up in the middle of the bar and the middle of the night after I had a few and your just drug into trying to play the drums every time you were near ‘em. Somebody try to talk you into it or something. I just kinda dropped it.”

“My fantasy was to be in the music business. Play music. Be one of the guys in the Rolling Stones or something. Be cool.” Dale, Jr. said.

Dale, Jr. was also asked, “What do you enjoy doin’ that people don’t know about you?”

Jr. couldn’t think of anything then later said, “I think the answer to your question, sir, is that I can, I’m real proud of the fact that I can build a computer. So I’ve always been a big computer geek. I’m a real big computer geek. So that would surprise a lot of people that I spent a lot a time learning how to build a computer.”
