NSC Walford Breeds Poison Dart Frogs

Oswestry, United Kingdom, September 16, 2016 --(PR.com)-- Laura Pugh, an Animal Care Lecturer at North Shropshire College’s (NSC) Walford Campus has successfully bred a number of Blue Poison Dart Frogs; this is the first time in a number of years that the diminutive amphibians have been bred at the College. The frogs, which are famous for their toxic skin and bright colours, originate from rainforests in South America and for the safety of NSC staff and students are fed a diet that prevents their skin from becoming toxic.

Laura Pugh, Animal Care Lecturer, commented "I started the project about 12 months ago, with many unsuccessful attempts of actually getting a tadpole to hatch but now we currently have three frogs and seven tadpoles, it takes a lot of time and dedication to ensure correct temperature, humidity and feeding procedures are correct to successfully hatch and rear a frog, the whole process can take a few months."

The expansion of any species within the animal care centre at Walford provides an enriching experience for students on both Animal Care and Animal Management courses. Laura goes on to say, "Students have been involved with moving of tadpoles, feeding and cleaning, the students get to see lots of young animals and species that are easy to breed and that are parent-reared being out on the animal care unit but seeing and being part of rearing a Blue Poison Dart Frog (Dendrobates tinctorius azureus) is something they may never get to see even when they pursue a career in the animal industry."
