Selma, AL, October 01, 2016 --(PR.com)-- John D. Johns Named as the 2016 Black Belt Legacy Award Recipient by The Black Belt Community Foundation.
Protective Life Corporation’s Chairman and CEO, John D. Johns, throughout his career, has been committed to improving the well-being and quality of life of Alabamians and their communities. This commitment and approach to corporate engagement in the community resonates strongly with the goals and philosophy of the Black Belt Community Foundation.
In a November 2013 interview with the Birmingham Art Museum’s My Museum magazine, Johns had the following to say about his and the Protective Life Foundation’s support for nonprofits across Alabama: “We look for organizations that are well-organized, well-managed, have strong leadership, and serve important community needs. We also like to make 'catalytic' gifts—contributions that set in motion a chain reaction that will lead to bigger and better things for the organization, as well as the broader community. We also have a special interest in helping children-at-risk, improving education and ensuring that our core cultural amenities continue to thrive and prosper.”
The Black Belt Community Foundation will honor Johns as its Black Belt Legacy Award honoree for 2016 during its Black Belt Legacy Dinner and fundraiser to be held on October 18, 2016 at 6pm in downtown Birmingham, AL at the Harbert Center (2019 Fourth Avenue North). Established in 2014, the Legacy Dinner honors leaders throughout the state of Alabama who have distinguished themselves in providing leadership and support of building a better and stronger Black Belt Region. Since its inception, leaders that have been honored at the Black Belt Legacy Dinner include: Judge John H. England, Jr.; George Duncan Hastie McMillan, former Alabama Lieutenant Governor; Henry “Hank” Sanders, Alabama Senator; Julian H. Smith, Jr., retired vice president of Alabama Power; and Dr. Carol Prejean Zippert, Black Belt community organizer and author. Funds raised in honor of these distinguished leaders are helping transform the region through the work of community-based nonprofits who are increasing graduation rates, improving reading level and using the arts to teach math, just to name a few successes.
“The Black Belt Community Foundation is grateful to have friends such as Johnny Johns and extraordinary partners such as Protective who possess such a strong community and regionally focused mindset. We appreciate all of our partners and friends, both near and far, who have given so selflessly to make the Black Belt a stronger region,” said Felecia Lucky, foundation president and executive director. “It’s through our partners' generous gifts of time, talents and treasure that we have been successful in transforming this region so many call home—for this reason, we celebrate. Johnny and Protective have been a bedrock of support, stimulating progress in Alabama’s Black Belt.”
Johns’ work ethic and commitment is reflected in the number of organizations he serves. He has served as the Chairman of the Business Council of Alabama and the Birmingham Business Alliance.
