Springfield, MA, October 10, 2016 --(PR.com)-- The National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE), the nation’s leading organization focused on promoting entrepreneurship through community colleges, is honoring a community college alumnus from San Francisco for his outstanding entrepreneurial achievements and contributions to his community at its 14th Annual Conference, now underway in Sacramento.
Winning the 2016 NACCE Alumni Entrepreneur Award is Brian McKeown, an alumnus of community colleges and champion for entrepreneurs. In addition to the award, McKeown received free registration to the conference, a $750 travel stipend, and certificates for ed2go courses. “Many students experience different pathways to entrepreneurship, and alumni entrepreneurs especially exemplify the entrepreneurial mindset and qualities of tenacity, the ability to leverage available assets, and a willingness to adapt and overcome obstacles,” said NACCE president and CEO Rebecca Corbin, Ed.D. “Brian is an outstanding role model for entrepreneurs in the community and the region.”
Brian McKeown is a small business development specialist, long-time food and alternative energy entrepreneur, micro-financier and an economic and social justice advocate in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has spent 20 years in the hospitality industry as a food vendor, music promoter and nightclub owner. He is a member of the board of the Richmond Worker Cooperative Loan Fund and is an Economic Development Commissioner for the city of Richmond, CA. He also serves as the Small Business representative for the Economic Development Program Advisory Committee, and is an advisory board member for “Doing What Matters for Jobs and the Economy” framework for the state of California. He also works as a Small Business Program Director for Kiva in Oakland and the Bay Area. Kiva is a nonprofit entity that crowd-funds no cost, zero percent interest loans of up to $10,000 for startup and existing micro-enterprises in the United States. He attended Sac City, American River, City College of San Francisco and Sierra College before graduating with a bachelor’s of science degree in Entrepreneurship/Small Business Management from San Francisco State University. He also received a Certificate in Micro-finance Management from the Grameen Bank, Dhaka, Bangladesh.
