Controlled Shear Point (CSP) Breakaway Technology Awarded “Most Useful” Innovation by the Arizona Council of Transportation Innovation (ACTI)

FNT Fiber Network Tools & Supplies, answered ACTI’s “Call to Innovators” with a new technology that met the criteria to save money, time, simplify work & improve safety. Controlled Shear Point Breakaway Technology used for deployment in traffic cabinets was selected as 1 of 14 Innovative products to be demonstrated. Inventor, Jeff Dominique, said, “It was an honor to have CSP selected to participate in the event, but a great accomplishment to be awarded “Most Useful” Innovation by my peers."

Phoenix, AZ, October 13, 2016 --(PR.com)-- The Arizona Council of Innovation (ACTI) held its first annual Innovation Event Tuesday, October 4th, 8am-3pm, hosted at the Conference Center at Rio Salado in Tempe, Arizona. FNT Fiber Network Tools & Supplies, answered ACTI’s “Call to Innovators”, submitting a new technology that met the Council Selection Committee’s criteria to save money, time, simplify work and improve safety. FNT’s Controlled Shear Point (CSP) Breakaway Technology used for deployment in traffic cabinets or light poles was selected as 1 of 14 Innovative products to be displayed and demonstrated during the event. Jeff Dominique, Inventor/CEO and Chief Instructor of FNT Fiber Network Training was quoted saying, “It was an honor to have CSP selected to participate in the event, but a great accomplishment to be awarded “Most Useful” Innovation by my peers. CSP Technology offers a cost effective, safe and quicker alternative to hard wiring cabinets and light poles.”

The initial idea was spurred from frustrated technicians wishing for an easier and safer way to reconnect traffic signals, communications and minimize infrastructure damage caused by traffic cabinet strikes. Jeff’s initial look into the cabinet revealed that all major components were hard wired requiring excessive and costly repair time that also put technicians, emergency responders and pedestrians at risk with potential live power in or around the damaged device. Furthermore, a study out of Virginia found that a 10-minute increase in primary incident duration is associated with 15% higher odds of secondary incidents[1]. This study concluded that the benefit of reducing the number of secondary incidents by 25% resulted in a benefit in terms of reduced incident delay estimated savings between $1.11 and $1.23 million per year1.

CSP, Ground Breaking Technology
Controlled Shear Point (CSP) protects cabling infrastructure by preventing stress applied to the cable in a typical hard wired connection. With the cable being control sheared at the base of the cabinet or structure, it prevents stress on both the cable in the ground and cable connecting to electrical devices within the cabinet or other user device. The Power Shear CSP is designed with the socket side of the connection facing the direction of the incoming power from the utility breaker. When a trip occurs from the movement of a cabinet or device, the top portion of the CSP which holds the plugs or prongs, disengages from the CSP base. This cuts off the power to the device and isolates potential live power within the protected confines of the base.

Not considered part of the cabinet itself, the CSP devices are available for Control, Power, and Fiber shear, and are easy to deploy on new and existing cabinets. In the event of a cabinet strike, the CSP breakaway technology enables fast and easy re-connection, restoring the intersection to full operability in minutes.

CSP Shear Technology began in 2009, with the introduction of Intelligent Release Interconnect System (IRIS™), a fiber optic break-away connector. The recently released CSP Shear Technology promises to change the face on how municipalities, as well as all Department of Transportation agencies across the country protect their investments, reduce liability and property damage, and promote a greater level of public safety.
